Day 26

from Sketchtober by Patrick McMinn

about

10/26/2015:

I'm in the home stretch of these things, and it was hard to get something going today. This sketch had a number of iterations before I settled on this, starting out as bad modular trumpet jazz and moving through even worse industrial drum machine and trumpet jams before getting to this texture.
I've been reading Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach lately, and he talks about aperiodic crystals, structures with recognizable units that repeat imperfectly, several times throughout the book. The concept reminds me a lot of Islamic Mosaic Art as well as the imperfect repetitions in Morton Feldman's music.
For this piece, I made a generative SuperCollider patch that cycled through several chords in non-intuitive random repetition patterns, and then ran that through the modular, with different control signals further cutting up and obscuring the patterns.
